Overview

THE FOLKLORE OF MALÁ FATRA

No discussion of Slovak culture can take place without a nod to the country’s folklore traditions. From music and dance ensembles, to handcrafts, open-air markets and festivals, we explore how folk traditions are alive and well in modern-day Slovakia and how they continue to receive widespread support. Slovaks are very proud to have such traditions and they pass on their folk songs, music, dance and handwork from generation to generation. Combine folklore traditions with beautiful walks in The National Park of Malá Fatra!

Day2

Destination Time Itinerary  

The Vrátna Valley
is considered to be one of
the most beautiful
valleys in Slovakia. It is
the starting point to
many hiking tours in
Malá Fatra, including to
Veľký Kriváň - the
highest peak of
Malá Fatra.


Chata pod Chlebom
The highest little tourist
mountain cottage in
Malá Fatra. It sits at an
altitude of 1415 meters 
above sea level and
offers accommodation,
meals and drinks.

Day3

Destination Time Itinerary  

Orava Castle
is considered to be one of
the most beautiful
castles in Slovakia.
The Castle is a
remarkable compound
consisting of the
buildings of the lower,
central and upper castles
as well as palaces,
fortifications and towers.



Zuberec Open-Air
Museum
is a unique open-air
Museum of the Orava
Village. The Museum
regularly organises
ethnological exhibitions,
whilst the international
Podroháčsky Folk
Festival is held in the
local amphitheatre each
August. Artisans show
off their talents and
present their produce
within the museum area.

Day4

Destination Time Itinerary  

Kysuce Open-Air Museum
The main reason for the
establishment of the
Museum of Kysuce
Village was to save rare
objects of folk
architecture from the
villages of Riečnica and
Harvelka that would
have otherwise been
inundated due to the
construction of Nová
Bystrica dam.
Every year during the
tourist season, visitors
may see the craftwork of
local
people, performances of
folk groups and cooking
of typical food from this
area.


Historic Forest
Railway – Vychlovka
The forest back path
railway is unique in
Europe and one of very
few in the world. It was
used to transport timber
in the past, but today is a
cultural and historical
monument, where you
can travel by train pulled
by a locomotive.

Day5

Destination Time Itinerary  

Strečno Castle
is an indispensable part
of the landscape scenery
of the Malá Fatra
mountains and the castle
rock and path above the
Castle provide a
beautiful view of the
Strečiansky priesmyk
mountain pass.


Wooden Rafts
The oldest written
documents about wood
rafting come from the
11th century. It became
more widely used as a
result of the settling of
the mountainous regions
and the development of
woodcutting. It has
existed as a tourist
attraction since the latter
half of the 19th century.


Žilina Town
The most significant
regional city in north-
western Slovakia. Its
arcaded square is unique
in its architecture. The
city is also a significant
centre of native Slovak
craft and culture.
Architectural highlights
of the town are the
Baroque Church of the
Conversion of St. Paul
the Apostle, with two
towers, and the
Capuchin monastery,
dating from the mid-
18th century. They are
located in a square-
shaped Mariánske
square.

Day6

Destination Time Itinerary  

Jánošíkove diery
(gorge)
A set of gorges in the
Malá Fatra, which
consists of Dolné Diery,
Horné Diery and Nové
Diery. A passage through
the gorges is made
possible by iron ladders
and footbridges. Horné
Diery is made by a gorge
between Veľký Rozsutec
and Malý Rozsutec,
typically rich in rocky
formations and
waterfalls.

Veľký Rozsutec
A characteristic rocky
peak of the Malá Fatra
with an altitude of 1610
meters above sea level. It
dominates the whole
surroundings and is
considered to be one of
the most beautiful peaks
in Slovakia.

Destination Time Itinerary

Folk festival – The
Jánošík’s days
The festival held
regularly in Terchová,
the birthplace of the
Slovak national hero
Juraj Jánošík, situated in
the north-west of
Slovakia. The festival is
held in a large open-air
theatre with 6000 places
and a big festival
pavilion with an
additional capacity of
2000 spectators.
Approximately 70 000
fans of folklore visit this
festival each year, with
the number of visitors
constantly rising.


Fujara – Zázrivá
String Cheese
Fujara is the most typical
Slovak musical
instrument. It was
inscribed into the
UNESCO List of the
Masterpieces of the Oral
and Intangible Heritage
of Humanity.
Zázrivá string Cheese is
made exclusively by
hand. The thick
and partly overripe
cheese lump is steamed
in hot water and then
taken out in the form of
threads called “vojka.”
Only this manual
processing of steamed
cheese – the kneading
and stretching – gives
the string cheese its
specific fibrous
structure. This cheese
was given a protected
geographical designation
by the European Union.
This can be used only by
producers from Zázrivá.

Additional info

In order to protect the nature and to ensure your safety, two hiking tracks in the Malá Fatra Mountains are not accessible to public between 1 March and 15 June. Enjoy your hiking in the daytime, between an hour after sunrise and hour before sunset.
However some tracks are open during that time. Please contact us and we will do our best to book your place.
