Overview

THE CAVES OF THE SLOVAK KARST

There are not many places left in the world where there are so many natural beauties, treasures and cultural attractions in one coherent territory. The Slovak Karst National Park, jointly with the adjacent Aggtelek Karst in Hungary, pertains to such a location. In terms of territory, it is the largest karst land in Central Europe (Karst - a landscape formed from the dissolution of soluble rocks). It is a huge limestone plateau, sloping slightly to the south. Its surface is covered in gentle, asymmetric waves, which were formed in ancient geological times. Deep canyons, like valleys of the Slana and Štítnik rivers flowing from North, divide this unique landscape into smaller sections - the Koniarska, Plešivská and Silická plateau which are separated from the Zádiel and Jasov plateau by the Turnianska basin in the East. The Slovak Karst cave system is listed in UNESCO's World Heritage List. These caves are noted for having the world's highest stalagmite, aragonite and sinter formations as well as an ice-filled abyss, which considering the territory's height above sea level is a unique phenomenon in Central Europe. Come over to discover the most beautiful caves in Slovakia!
